"Over the years we have met and made so many great relationships with the band and the family who loves Los Lobos. For the beginning of their 50th year, we joined together to give them a special gift to show our love for all the great times that the band has given us all” shared John Leopold (Managing Director @ Arhoolie Foundation)
Three decades have passed since the release of Los Lobos’ sixth record, and it still remains one of the most celebrated albums in their catalog. For an album so monumental and so loved, we have to do something big to celebrate!
Over the next 30 days, we will be spotlighting the record, sharing something every day. We’ll be featuring clips of each song, archival band interviews, and more — and we want you to join us!
We want to hear how this album has been part of your lives: share you stories & memories, favorite songs and live performances, or go all out and recreate that iconic album cover (who has a yellow chair!?). The entire Lobos fan community is part of the history of this music and we want you to be part of this milestone.

"The concept of this record was gratitude. It was a thank you to the city that we started in and the artists and records that inspired us to try and make a living out of this. I think it's an important concept and I just want to thank everybody who had anything to do with our career. Next year will be 50 years – it's amazing to think about and these things never get old, so thank you."
This makes the 4th for the band, following 1984's Best Mexican-American Performance for "Anselma", 1990's Best Mexican-American Performance for "La Pistol y El Corazon", and 1996's Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Mariachi Suite", from Papa’s Dream.

David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, and Steve Berlin open the album with “La Rama” (the branch). This lively song is in the regional folk style known as son jarocho, which is popular in the Veracruz region of Mexico. La Rama is also the name of the traditional Mexican holiday custom where the community adorns branches from a tree and displays it in a nightly procession through the neighborhood.
Another album highlight “La Murga de Panamá” was originally recorded in 1971 by the legendary salsa duo of Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe. And though “La Murga” is actually the name for a group that assembles to dance, sing, and play music during another South American holiday - Carnival – the spirit of the song is no less infectious at Christmastime.
Los Lobos transform the 1958 novelty song “Dónde Está Santa Claus” (Where is Santa Claus) into a “lowrider oldie” with a head-nodding groove powered by Hidalgo’s guitar and Berlin’s vibraphone. Rosas delivers an impeccable lead vocal on “Regalo de Reyes” (meaning Gift of Kings), a song made famous by Javier Solís, Mexican actor and singer of boleros and rancheras. Naturally, the collection also includes the band’s take on Jose Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad.”
The album’s new original “Christmas And You,” was written by Hidalgo and Pérez. Hidalgo’s vocals are sweet and soulful. Berlin layers in piano along with some Omnichord, Rosas provides electric guitar, and Lozano adds upright bass to create what is sure to become a modern classic.

"the top-line melody remains intact, but everything else - the instrumentation, tempo - is altered." -the Guardian
This split 12" titled Los Lobos vs. The Shins features three distinct versions of their song, the Fear; the original booming, sweeping track from Heartworms; the second kinetic "flipped" version from The Worm's Heart; and the final rendition, heavy on the heartstrings, is from buddy-band Los Lobos, which took vital form while the two groups played out together. In Mercer's words, Los Lobos "just destroyed our version."
Los Lobos Vs. The Shins is being released on vinyl via Third Man Records on Record Store Day 2018 (Apr 21) and digitally via Aural Apothecary/Monotone (Apr 23).
Both bands performed at the Arroyo Seco Festival last year and previewed their collaborative version of “The Fear” - check it out here.

The song by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee also picked up Record of the Year, Best Urban Fusion Performance and Best Short Term Video.
There has been no escaping the song since it was released last January as it broke the counting machines at Youtube and on line music streaming services.
And it made history as only the third Spanish-language song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
So what happens after No. 1? How do these artists successfully ride this wave of popularity? Will Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee have to perform that song at their shows for the rest of their careers? Will their next records be "Despacito 2.0"?
For a clue, it's instructive to look back at the other two bands that have been there and done that. Most people won't remember the name of the act that gave us the 1996 chart-topper "Macarena." (The Spanish pop band was called Los Del Rio.) Much more familiar is Los Lobos, the band that gave us the very first song in Spanish to hit the No. 1 spot, 1987's "La Bamba" — from the Richie Valens biopic of the same name.

Over the past 40 years, they have gone from “just another band from East L.A.” into the premier Mexican-American roots rockers, mixing a traditional sound with a punk attitude, most recently earning a well-deserved nomination for a much-vaunted—and much-needed—spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The tune opens with a flurry of mandolin and acoustic guitars before settling into a slow, earthy shuffle that slides alongside singer and guitarist David Hidalgo’s distinctive voice. Maybe it’s the photo on the album cover, but the song seems bathed in a golden light that gives warmth to the existential, and largely unanswerable, questions Los Lobos pose in the song.
“What came to mind was the idea of journey in all its shapes and forms. The path of the immigrant and he looks at a new land on the horizon with all its promises. The endless quest for life’s meaning in the spiritual sense, what lies beyond our mortal existence,” drummer Louie Perez says. “The question of what the future may bring for this band as we stare down 42 years coming this fall. And personally, at age 62, how to navigate through the time I have left.”
“Gates of Gold” comes from an album by the same title, the veteran band’s first studio release since “Tin Can Trust” in 2010. It’s the latest entry in a storied career that began in east Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. Since then, Los Lobos has released more than a dozen studio albums, including their 1984 breakthrough “How Will the Wolf Survive?” and won four Grammys.
Not only is “Gates of Gold” the title track, the song set the tone for the other 10 tracks on the album, Perez says. “It put everything into context, giving a cohesiveness to the individual songs as one body of work.”
“Gates of Gold” is due Sept. 25 on 429 Records.

Mariachi El Bronx, a punk group from LA got the evening started and feet were already moving before Los Lobos took to the stage! It was difficult to try to fit everyone's favorites in but I'm sure all who were there agreed that the setlist was one that you just couldn't sit down on! The Latin hip-hop/rock group Ozomatli kept up this pace too and also welcomed a few special guests on stage during their set that included former members Cut Chemist, MC Jabu Smith-Freeman and Kanetic Source.
Great night all around!

FEATURING LOS LOBOS MUSICIANS DAVID HIDALGO AND LOUIE PÉREZ
March 27, 2013, 7:30 P.M.
$20 General Admission, $15 Autry Members

LOS ANGELES, CA – March 7, 2013 – The Autry National Center presents EvangelineREMIXED, a work-in-progress multimedia play featuring musical performances by Grammy Award–winning Los Lobos musicians David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez, on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.
Set in East L.A. during the late 1960s, Evangeline REMIXED centers on a young Chicana, played by Catherine Lidstone, who is a devoted daughter by day and a Hollywood go-go dancer by night. As East L.A. begins to deal with its particular civil rights issues, she must reconcile her individual journey with the need to hold on to her relationship with her family and her neighborhood. Her struggle reflects the shared history of the city and its citizens at a time of enormous social change.
Evangeline REMIXED will debut Pérez not just as one of the project’s originators but also as a featured storyteller and member of the ensemble of actors and musicians.Evangeline REMIXED is co-written by Pérez with Theresa Chavez and Rose Portillo, who direct the production. Pérez and Hidalgo draw on their 40-year catalogue to provide the soundtrack for the play, marking the first time the songbook is part of an original production. The project also integrates video designed by award-winning cinematographer Claudio Rocha, making Evangeline REMIXED a dynamic live multimedia performance.
“My lyrics have always come from a personal experience populated by people, places, and things from the reality of growing up in a Mexican-American community,” explains Pérez.
“We are pleased to present Evangeline REMIXED as part of our commitment to sharing the diverse stories of the American West through exhibitions and a range of public programs,” said Robyn Hetrick, Director of Public Programs and Events at the Autry. “We’re delighted that in addition to audiences enjoying the evening performance featuring David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez, high school students from East Los Angeles will have the opportunity to interact with these artists to help give voice to their own stories and experiences.”
In partnership with About Productions’ Young Theaterworks, a program serving at-risk high school students, the Autry will provide transportation for over 120 students and teachers to attend an open rehearsal of EvangelineREMIXED on Friday, March 22. Students will get an inside look at the production and engage in dialogue with Portillo and Chavez about topics including traditional gender roles in Latino families, the role of youth in protest movements, and their personal identification with the stories being told. A tour of the museum will follow, tying in themes from the project with cultural artifacts from the Autry’s collection.
General admission tickets for the performance are $20 for general admission and $15 for Autry members. Admission includes a post-play discussion for all attendees. A private reception with Pérez and Hidalgo will also take place following the performance. Tickets for the program plus the post-performance reception are $50 and support the education programs of About Productions. For tickets or information, please visit TheAutry.org.
"'When The Circus Comes' is the story of two lifelong friends who have a falling out over something really stupid and risk losing all the history they have together," Los Lobos drummer and guitarist Louie Perez says.

On February 24, 2006, Los Lobos performed their seminal album Kiko in its entirety at the House Of Blues in San Diego, CA. Kiko Live captures the band in peak performance as they faithfully re-create the mood and magic of their most critically acclaimed work. Available on CD, DVD, or Blu-ray/CD combo.
Shout! Factory is proud to reissue a remastered and expanded 20th Anniversary Edition of the landmark album, Kiko, which contains five previously unreleased bonus tracks and a new essay by journalist and longtime friend of the band, Luis Torres. Originally released in 1992, Kiko was embraced by fans and hailed by critics as the band's defining moment, the album that put Los Lobos back on track in terms of innovation and exploration. Kiko was produced by Mitchell Froom, who received a Grammy nomination for Producer of the Year for his work on the album. Dubbed one of the albums of the decade by The Wall Street Journal, "the album of the year" by the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, and one of "The Essential Recordings of the '90s" by Rolling Stone, Los Lobos also took home an MTV Music Video Award for Breakthrough Video for "Kiko and the Lavender Moon" in 1993.

This year's festival, "Solazu", will celebrate the rich literary heritage of our neighbors to the south: Latin America and the Caribbean. Traveling the spine, seas, and islands of the Americas, Aspen Summer Words 2012 will explore one of the most ancient and diverse regions on the planet. With leading Latin American and Caribbean authors at the helm, our festival will traverse vast distances, 14 millennia, 51 territories, 6500 miles, and more than 1000 languages to reveal the soulful stories that unite us all.
In many respects, The Three Louies are representative of the the arc of the Chicano experience in America. They were all distilled in the cauldron of strident activism of the 1970s. They all made their way through public schools that generally regarded Mexicans as somehow unworthy and incapable. They learned how to get the most out of education. And they all made a dent in the fields they entered, always remembering to smile and cause others to do the same.
More subtle than the Three Stooges, more bilingual than the Three Musketeers, and funnier than Manny, Moe and Jack -- The Three Louies will make you laugh, will make you cry, will make you remember, and maybe provide just a tiny bit of insight into the wacky world that is the human condition. The Three Louies: An evening of fun and maybe even some frolic.

Not too dissimilar from the beginnings of Middle Brother, McCauley decided he wanted to make another record during some downtime in his new home base of Nashville with producers Adam Landry and Justin Collins (Middle Brother, Deer Tick). While attending a Los Lobos show (one of his all-time favorite bands), he made his way backstage and met Steve Berlin. McCauley convinced Berlin to come to Nashville to play on the record. Over the course of the next month, he also managed to convince Saint Pé (whom he'd met once before), Morris (who had opened for Deer Tick on tour) and Dufresne (a good friend from his hometown of Providence, RI). McCauley also recruited Deer Tick keys/sax player Robbie Crowell to play bass on the album.
What happened next was entirely unexpected; the musicians McCauley had recruited to play on his record ended up contributing their own songs to the album, and a fully-formed band emerged rather than a group of musicians playing on another artists' record.
The Diamond Rugs debut long player is out now. It was recorded in Nashville and produced by Adam Landry and Justin Collins (Middle Brother, Deer Tick).
The Multimedia presentation features the songbook of Hidalgo and Perez, and is inspired by their song "Evangeline."
Evangeline... a devoted daughter by day, a Hollywood go-go dancer by night. The journey of self-discovery by a young Chicana, whose neighborhood roots and make believe world collide when she experiences the West Side art scene and the music of the Sunset Strip, is set against the 1968 student walkouts in East L.A. and the flight for equal education and civil rights.
After a nearly three year development process, Evangeline's first theatrical run ends with a matinee performance on Sunday, May 27th in Los Angeles, CA, but the company hopes to tour other communities in the near future! For remaining dates and to purchase tickets visit the Bootleg Theatre's ticket office.

On July 12, Appleseed Recordings will release "Use Me," a new CD by master roots musician David Bromberg. The concept of the CD was for David to contact some of his favorite musicians and request that they provide him with a song to record, produce the track, and play on it.
Los Lobos were gracious enough to provide a new version of "The Long Goodbye," the Hidalgo/Perez co-write that's the title song of their duo album, for this project. The band also produced the track and play all instruments on it except the dobro, played by David.

The soundtrack, featuring Los Lobos, has also received similar rave reviews with one customer saying, "This is one of the few soundtracks that works brilliantly within the movie but can also entertain on its own. Through their management, Los Lobos issued the following statement: “We support the boycott of Arizona. The new law will inevitably lead to unfair racial profiling and possible abuse of people who just happen to look Latino. As a result, in good conscience, we could not see ourselves performing in Arizona. We regret the inconvenience this may have caused the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, Casino Arizona, Talking Stick Resort and our fans, but we feel strongly that it is the right thing to do.”
The members of Los Lobos are Steve Berlin, David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano, Cesar Rosas and Louie Perez
The 11 tracks on Tin Can Trust offer the perfect balance of Los Lobos’ parts: the band’s lineup has remained uninterrupted since 1984, when saxophonist/keyboardist Steve Berlin joined original members Louie Pérez (guitar, drums, vocals), David Hidalgo (guitar, violin, accordion, percussion, vocals), Cesar Rosas (guitar, vocals) and Conrad Lozano (bass, vocals), each of whom had been there since the beginning in 1973.
Seven songs on the album are distinguished and genius Hidalgo-Pérez collaborations, including the opening track “I’ll Burn It Down,” which features a guest vocal harmony from blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi. Three others were written in whole or in part by Rosas – including the album’s two Spanish-language numbers: the cumbia “Yo Canto” and the norteño “Mujer Ingrata” – and display Los Lobos’ signature seamless infusion of Mexican folk songs into rock music. Also included in Tin Can Trust – a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” – offering a nod to the bands’ shared history that extends back into the 1980s when the Angelenos befriended and opened shows for their northern peers.
As with every new recording Los Lobos makes, Tin Can Trust moves Los Lobos into yet another new dimension while simultaneously sounding like no one else in the world but Los Lobos. Los Lobos’ unified vision and strong work ethic are evident throughout the self-produced album, but so is something even greater: “an intuitiveness,” says Los Lobos songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Louie Pérez, “that happens only from being in a band for so long.” As Rolling Stone once wrote, “This is what happens when five guys create a magical sound, then stick together for 30 years to see how far it can take them.”
Look for Los Lobos on tour this summer in support of Tin Can Trust. Stay tuned to www.loslobos.org for up-to-minute information.
Featured artists who will be performing music written by and associated with Jimi Hendrix include blues giant Buddy Guy, contemporary guitar greats Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Eric Johnson, Cesar Rojas and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos as well as Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford.

Said Walt Disney Records President David Agnew, “Los Lobos' unique style and musical vision make them one of the all-time great American bands We are honored that Los Lobos have chosen to celebrate Disney's musical legacy in such a joyous and beautiful way. Disney songs are classics precisely because they can be reinterpreted by iconic artists like this, generation after generation."
With millions of records sold over the course of their 36-year career, Los Lobos is known for ignoring the conventions of popular music. Their family-friendly Disney Sound CD is no different. The band takes on timeless songs like “Heigh-Ho” (from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”), “I Wan'na Be Like You” and “Bare Necessities” (from “The Jungle Book”), “Not in Nottingham” and “Oo-De-Lally” (from “Robin Hood”) “Cruella De Vil” (from “101 Dalmatians”), “Bella Notte” (from “Lady and the Tramp”) and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” (from “Song of the South”).
Los Lobos also throws in some surprises, performing “Grim Grinning Ghosts” and “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room,” songs familiar to Disneyland fans who have experienced the Haunted Mansion and the Enchanted Tiki Room. Other songs featured on the CD include “I Will Go Sailing No More” (from “Toy Story”), “The Ugly Bug Ball” (from “Summer Magic”) and an instrumental medley of “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “It's a Small World.” On the album, the band breaks out instruments unique to Mexican culture, including hidalguera, requinto, jarocho, jarana, guitarron and bajo sexto.
Composed of singer/guitarists David Hidalgo, Louie Perez and Cesar Rosas, singer/bassist Conrad Lozano, sax player Steve Berlin and drummer Cougar Estrada, Los Lobos filtered rock, Tex-Mex, country, R&B, blues and traditional Spanish and Mexican music such as boleros and Norteño, crafting a distinctive sound all their own.
Steve Berlin adds: "We're all really happy with it. The kids record doesn't sound like a kids record. It just sounds like Los Lobos playing funky old songs, so I imagine over time we'll probably be integrating some of those songs into our set." The band will be touring throughout the fall.
The triple-Grammy Award winners released their debut album in 1978. The band broke wide with 1984's critically acclaimed “How Will the Wolf Survive?” In 1987, they released their follow-up, “By the Light of the Moon,” and also recorded Ritchie Valens covers for the soundtrack to the film “La Bamba.” Their version of the title track became a #1 hit for the band. "We're honored to work with Los Lobos, a band that we've all been fans of for years, and that has a rich history of unbelievable music. We're thrilled to be releasing their next project," says Garson Foos, President of Shout! Factory.
Celebrating 36 years together, the East L.A. vets are marking a new milestone with the commencement work on their 18th record, the highly anticipated debut on Shout! Factory and follow-up to the lauded 2006 release The Town and The City, which drew four-star reviews from Rolling Stone, Mojo, The Independent, and many others.
Not one to repeat the same formula twice, what kind of record Los Lobos will make next is anyone's guess. "We never really plan any album," says Los Lobos' saxophonist/keyboardist/percussionist and producer Steve Berlin. "Like with Kiko and Colossal Head (the quintet's 1992 and 1996 heady opuses that broke artistic ground both times), we just played the songs that showed up, naturally. With each project, we try to make our songwriting an artistic statement, where the stories we're telling and the arrangements we're composing get our point across. But to a certain extent, we make our songs opaque, mysterious. We leave it up to the listener to interpret . . . . That's the highest purpose of artists, we think - not to rob the spirit out of the work."
In the meantime, look for Los Lobos on tour. For a handful of select shows only, these prolific musicians have traded their plugged instruments for their guitarrones, jaranas, and bajo sextos for a stunning set list of acoustic verve.
Along with Los Lobos this year's schedule features Umphrey's McGee, Moe., and many more great acts.
The broadcast will be in high quality Adobe Flash. To ensure the best viewing experience possible, please ensure that you have Flash 10 installed on your computer, and are connected to a 768 Kbps connection or better.
Be the Change is a groundbreaking multi-tiered youth vote campaign providing a direct role for artists who support Obama to increase voter turnout. Through pre-recorded messages, musicians will alert their fans to vote on Election Day. Artists may also choose to send follow-up messages to their fans detailing their personal reasons for supporting Sen. Obama in the days leading up to the election. These unique messages give musicians an opportunity to personally reach out to their fans and start a bi-directional conversation with their fans about issues and politics.
“This election is THE pivotal moment of our time.” says saxophonist Steve Berlin. “We can move forward and try to correct the heinous imbalance of the past eight years, or continue the policies that have brought near ruin to the planet, destroyed our financial well being, conflated the rule of law and damaged our standing in the world community. We urge our fans and all of those who care to get out and vote (early if at all possible!) for Barack Obama and drag someone with you when you go.”
By leveraging the power of online music communities, Music for Democracy is engaging segments of the youth vote that are overlooked by traditional campaign operations. This extends beyond the college campuses where the majority of the young voter outreach is taking place. Only about 20% of the youth vote (18-29) lives on a college campus. Although 2008 has been called the "Year of the Young Voter," funding for youth vote groups is only a quarter of what it was in 2004. “Be the Change” reaches out to the non-college youth voter where they are most likely to be found, online and on their cell phones.
Central to this GOTV outreach is the Be the Change widget, a simple, portable application that can be embedded on nearly any website. The widget allows a user to sign up for calls, emails and other outreach from participating artists on Social Networking Sites (SNS) like Myspace and Facebook. An estimated 18.6 million social networking accounts are held by 18 to 24 year olds; and forty-two percent of people ages 18 to 29 use the internet to learn about politics, making the social networking websites (SNS) an ideal vehicle for targeting the youth vote.
“Los Lobos is a fantastic addition to the Be the Change Project,” said Bear Kittay, National Director of Music for Democracy. “This project is using new technologies to break down the barriers between politically engaged musicians and their fans, and with such an extensive online community, Los Lobos can help us target those untapped voters, and make a quantifiable impact on Election Day.”
Be the Change provides a direct role for Obama-supporting musicians in GOTV efforts. Through the site, artists send telephone messages to their fans detailing their personal reasons for supporting Barack Obama. Fans can reply and discuss the election -- all over the phone. These unique messages give musicians an opportunity to personally reach out to their fans, create a meaningful endorsement, and normalize the discussion of politics.
The final component of the GOTV project is the Be the Change Rockstar Contest. In this contest, fans are given the power to recruit friends and family to earn points. "Rockstar" fans who are the most motivated win a live phone call from their favorite artist on Election Day. The contest will expand MFD’s ability to target and engage young voters by capturing the contact and demographic information of everyone that participates through this peer-to-peer outreach.

Mellencamp and his band -- Mike Wanchic (guitar), Andy York (guitar), Dane Clark (drums), John Gunnell (bass), Miriam Sturm (violin) and Troye Kinnett (keyboards) have just completed work on tracks for a new, as yet untitled album recorded at Mellencamp’s Belmont Mall studio, near Bloomington, IN, produced by T Bone Burnett. While a broad spectrum of Mellencamp’s repertoire, reflecting four decades of recording, will be represented in the fall tour dates, it is also expected that some of the unreleased songs from the new sessions will be previewed as well.
Likewise, Los Lobos -- Cesar Rosas, Louie Pérez, Steve Berlin, Conrad Lozano and David Hidalgo -- will be highlighting songs from the breadth of their career, including their latest album Town and City, using musical molds built on the blues, rockabilly, jazz, Latin and their own Mexican-American heritage.
On Thursday of this week (9/6) Mellencamp will perform on NBC’s NFL kickoff telecast on immediately preceding the Indiana Colts vs. New Orleans Saints’ season opener. Following that, Mellencamp will journey to New York’s Randall’s Island where, on Sunday, September 9th, he will perform as part of this year’s Farm Aid 2007: A Home Grown Festival along with his Farm Aid co-founders Willie Nelson, Neil Young and Dave Matthews with Tim Reynolds plus The Allman Brothers Band, Counting Crows, Matisyahu, Guster, The Derek Trucks Band, Warren Haynes, Supersuckers, The Ditty Bops, Montgomery Gentry and others.
"He was the voice of the revolution, like a Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan of South Africa, and he still is." -Dave Matthews

The Wolf Tracks: The Best of Los Lobos
Los Lobos isn't just "La Bamba." That impossibly catchy 1987 hit tune defines them to many, but the tapestry this pioneering Latino roots-rock band has weaved is broader than that. The new CD Wolf Tracks: The Best Of Los Lobos presents a handy, compact primer to their sound.
The band from east L.A. absorbs elements of R&B, Mexicana, blues, folk and plain ol' rock 'n' roll into a sonic stew that's uniquely American.
Accordions dance with saxophones, guitars and marimbas with mandolin.
Frontman David Hidalgo's broad, booming voice can croon traditional tunes as well as big-blast rockers in English or Spanish or both, wringing real heart out of his songs. Together with Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, Louie Pérez and Steve Berlin, Hidalgo crafts an open, inviting sound that's steeped in the dusty, multi-cultural soil of Southern California, a land that's soaked up the influence of dozens of immigrant cultures.
The band's best tunes tell little all-American tales about people from the neighborhood, such as "One Time One Night," which beautifully sums up an immigrant's hopes and fears. Wolf Tracks follows Los Lobos from their earliest EP in 1983 up to 2002's Good Morning Aztlán, with extended stops at some of their biggest hits, 1984's How Will The Wolf Survive and 1987's By The Light of the Moon. It's here you find the band trying on new styles left and right, yet never sounding like anything but themselves.
The very traditional sounding Spanish-language "La Pistola Y El Corazon"
sounds timeless and elegant, while the lonesome bluesy ballad "A Matter of Time" could come from nearly any culture, so universal are its lyrics. Other real highlights on Wolf Tracks are the moody, semi- psychedelic "Kiko and the Lavender Moon" from 1992, which fades in and out like a gauzy dream, while 2002's "Good Morning Aztlán" thunders along like the gritty soundtrack to a road trip down never-ending sun- drenched dirt roads. The CD also includes the live gem "Volver, Volver"
and the previously unreleased track "Border Town Girl."
And of course, there's "La Bamba," the remake of Richie Valens' hit classic from the film of the same name. It's still a hooky treat, and it's so addictive that I swear I didn't ever notice until recently it doesn't contain a word of English (I admit I'm not always real observant). "La Bamba" doesn't sum up Los Lobos' sound -- no one song here really can -- but it's still a great single.
With 20 tracks trying to cover a 30-plus year career, Wolf Tracks can't quite be comprehensive, and die-hards will surely have favorites that didn't get on. The earlier box set Just Another Band From East L.A.
remains the definitive overview for those who want to dig deeper. Wolf Tracks only has three tunes from after 1992, covering three albums'
worth of songs. The band's output has slowed since their 1980s heyday, yet they've still put out some solid material on later albums.
Yet for a novice to Los Lobos, Wolf Tracks is a winning survey of an eclectic legacy, one of the richest roots-rock bands around. Wolf Tracks is worth howling about.
